 Open a chrome browser, install an app from Chromestore (magentme or magnet2torrent etc) it basically shortens/converts the magnet file to a torrent file. UT DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY OPEN WHEN I CLICK ON A MAGNET ICON TO START DOWNLOADING TORRENT. BOOYAH SUCCESS 2-3hrs of mucking around, I now am successfully 12 of the way through a magnet file in my uTorrent. In UT Preferences, Start when Windows Start is checked but I do notice that Associate with Torrent Files is grayed out (how do I ungrey it to Associate with Magnet Files or is this the problem?), and in BitTorrent Preferences all are checked except Limit Local Peer Bandwidth. I have done a clean Uninstall by deleting any registry file entries, search all files and delete UT files and still no change. If you have installed anything that torrents after that (Popcorn-Time, Another P2P App, ETC) then be sure to have those such features unchecked for those clients. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version over and over and UT simple will not open and start downloading the magnet torrent after a while. When you install qBittorrent be sure to have the 'associate. I give up unless someone can specifically walk me through why or how to make this work with IE8.

I have tried everything and many suggestions from trying many different browsers, editing the registry, bookmarking with Java code etc etc etc. Your Chrome or Firefox browser may stop automatically opening magnet links with default torrent clients.

No firewall except Microsoft OS Firewall (Security Center) UT does not open and start downloading when I click on the magnet icon. Found this, give it a go: The solution in Windows 7 is to edit the registry entry for magnet links.
